A Winter Storm can be a Magical Experience!

wave crashin into rocks

The crowds of summer have gone back to the daily grind in the cities and
you can have our world all to yourself and benefit from our value season pricing in the bargain.

Believe it or not, the very best time to visit can be during a raging winter storm when the wind howls in from a turbulent ocean and powerful waves crash into shore exploding into froth and foam that you can feel and smell and sometimes taste. Dress warm in a thick old coat, pull your hat on tight and take a long walk on one of our deserted beaches just after the brunt of the storm has passed. During the lull in the tempest let the power of nature purge your soul of negative thoughts. Admire the dark swirling clouds rushing over tossing seas and think about what is really important in life. Then go back to one of our extraordinarily comfortable vacation homes, pull up a cozy chair and have a warm drink by the fireplace. Bring a friend or a mate and renew an important relationship, write a letter with pen and paper the old fashioned way to a loved one, listen to opera at full volume while gigantic ocean waves crash in the background, read poetry, take a nap, or go fishing. (If you don't have any opera with you give a yell and we'll loan you one of our discs and if you need rod and reel we can help you find that as well.)

Sandburg described this ephemeral phenomenon best:

THE fog comes
on little cat feet.

It sits looking
over harbor and city
on silent haunches
and then moves on.

Winter is also a great time to enjoy the mists in our rivers and the fog along the ocean front. It is a time to unleash your imagination and let the mood of the day wash over you and color your thoughts. Some of the very best hikes ever are on a river trail when the mist hangs in close to the water and the animals are shapes and forms on the other bank. For some reason the color of the vegetation up close is more vibrant than usual and the sound of rushing water in the river is more intense. If you enjoy photography sunshine is good, but mist is better. Get up above it and look down. Spend a day exploring the trails in the Boardman Scenic Corridor and then get back to your home away from home and enjoy a hot tub in the fog before dinner. (The hot tubs in all of our vacation homes are the very best available and we take good care of them. A rejuvenating dip in one of our tubs in the evening or morning mist is worth the trip all by itself.)
