The Frances Shrader Old-Growth Trail

The tallest tree in this forest is a Douglas-fir that is more than ten feet in diameter and 220 feet in height. It contains enough wood to build three full size 3 bedroom homes. It is known as the "Laddie Gale Tall Fir." Lauren (Laddie) Gale, a native of Gold Beach, was a very famous Oregon University basketball player before World War II, and was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1979. The trail itself is named after Frances Shrader a long time resident of the area and a well-known and much beloved member of the Forest Service. Frances helped plan the trail before her death and it was named in her honor.
